What Do I Wear To My Family Portrait?

What do I wear to my family portrait? Great question!

Our family photography is about capturing the moments, the expressions and the interaction between family. Clothing is a perfect opportunity to express your personality and that of your childrens’, but if it comes down to a choice between two outfits, there are a few things you may want to take into consideration. What you wear can either steal attention away from your faces or enhance the beauty of your photograph and compliment your family.

Here are our suggestions to help you cut down the agonising task of choosing the perfect clothing for your photo shoot:

  • Bold patterns – think black and white stripes or really strong colourful flowers. Strong contrast always draws attention to itself and makes the photograph look very ‘busy’. Soft or subtle patterns are perfectly fine though!
  • Large logos or writing
  • Being too matchy – everyone wearing matching white T-shirts and jeans is not very natural looking and it’s a little over-done!
  • Too much black/dark clothing – this suggestion is specific to Sunlit Studios clients because our style is quite the opposite – bright and happy!
  • Baggy clothes that hide your stomach {for maternity sessions!}

  • Feel free to wear clothing that suits your personality – after all, we want to capture the real you! Your favourite statement jewellery or a fresh floral crown might be just the thing to really give the photo that something extra special.
  • Wear complementing (not matching) colours. Many of our clients stick to a white base with vibrant pops of colour, which suits our bright style perfectly! You could also go with earthy tones, beach tones or incorporate your home decor’s colours.
  • It’s lovely for girls and women to wear a dress or skirt as a feminine contrast to the male’s pants. Dresses can look particularly stunning in silhouettes or blowing in the wind.
  • Consider your selected location. Pops of blue look amazing against a very orange pine forest floor. Bright and light colours look beautiful at the beach. Earthy colours can really work for a paddock or green location.
  • Invest in professional hair and make-up. Not only is it a wonderful confidence-boost and treat for yourself, but you want to be 100% happy with how you look {our canvasses last 75+ years!}

We are photographers, so we’ll let photographs do the rest of the talking!

This family nailed it, love the pops of aqua colour, soft patterns and statement necklace!

The fresh floral crown really added to the magic of this photograph. The soft floral pattern and light blue shirt perfectly suits this romantic look.

Soft colours, soft patterns, and a beautiful dress. Soft blue with pinks seems to be a winning combination. Just perfect!

The Hillier family went with earthy tones – natural greens with one fun pop of bright blue. This scheme worked beautifully against the greenery of their location.

Another perfect example of using lots of white with pops of colour. The boots and suspenders were such a cute touch to show off their personality and country background!
